Former Secretary of Defense William Perry is so concerned about the growing risk of nuclear terrorism that he has created a free online course to educate the public on how to fight the threat.
In his memoir, “My Journey at the Nuclear Brink,” William Perry, former defense secretary under Bill Clinton, describes his “nuclear nightmare,” whereby a terrorist group is able to enrich a small amount of uranium sufficient to create a nuclear weapon.
In his nightmare, this enriched uranium is fashioned into a crude nuclear bomb which is then transported in a shipping container to Washington D.C., where it is detonated near the Capitol building, instantly killing thousands and leaving hundreds of thousands injured and unable to receive medical care. His scenario paints a picture of nationwide panic as the country is plunged into a constitutional crisis, left without a President or a legislature, and the economy in ruins as the stock market crashes.
“We can hardly bear to imagine the catastrophic outcome of this hypothetical scenario - and yet we must,” warns Perry. "It is all too feasible that a terror group could make their own nuclear bomb.”
William Perry is considered a foremost nuclear expert and since his time in office he has gone on to found a non-profit organization working to combat the threat of nuclear catastrophe.
His organization, the William J. Perry Project, has brought together internationally renowned nuclear experts, politicians, scholars and activists to answer the question of how we can lower the risk of nuclear terrorism in a revolutionary new free online educational program called “The Threat of Nuclear Terrorism.”
The course, produced by Stanford University, is the first of its kind, and is intended for the general public. Former Senator and co-chairman of the Nuclear Threat Initiative Sam Nunn says of Perry, “Everyone interested in protecting the future of our nation and planet should learn from Bill’s experience."
